Heaven is eternal–the earth endures.

Why do heaven and earth last forever?

They do not live for themselves only.

This is the secret of their durability.

For this reason the sage puts himself last

                   and so ends up ahead.

He stays a witness to life,

                            so he endures.

            Serve the needs of others,

and all your own needs will be fulfilled.

Through selfless action, fulfillment is attained.

Lao Tzu’s teachings come from nature. The heaven is eternal, and the earth endures, and they both last forever. Lao Tzu raises a beautiful quotation, to endure life, that moves towards eternity. Just with the simple idea, to drop oneself, one can connect with the eternal process of life.

The heaven and earth are flexible because they don’t have any plans for themselves, and thus, they remain available to the existence all the time. This is the secret formula for everlasting durability with life.

It shows tremendous trust in life and in love and care for others. When the heaven and earth live to nourish life on earth, they get nourish in the process and stay fresh every moment.

He stays a witness to life,

                            so he endures.

The sage learns from heaven and earth and applies in his life. He puts himself last, and so he always stays ahead. He stays witness to life, and observes how life unfolds by itself, and so he endures.

When we observe life around us, we set our mind free. When the mind is free from thoughts, we observe more of the activity around us, and we only act, when it’s necessary.

The sage observes and stays a witness to life, and allows the nature of the world and the nature of the people, to unfold by itself.

When we witness life, we learn more from life. We only take the right steps when needed, and not hurrying and speeding up with life, and spoiling what we have created.

An ordinary man takes one step forward and two steps backward, and spend most of his time, correcting those two steps.

Serve the needs of others,

and all your own needs will be fulfilled.

Through selfless action, fulfillment is attained.

Lao Tzu shares his message, for every individual, to have the fulfilment in life. When we think to serve the needs of others, our needs by the law of nature itself get fulfilled.

When we strive to fulfil our needs, we always lack something in life. When we think about others, our mind and emotions expand. When we think for our self, our mind and emotions contracts. When our mind contracts, it cannot see and think correctly. One decision of life leads to another, and with our little mind, we create the mess for our self.

Before life happens outside, it unfolds inside. The sage’s allows the life, to unfold inside, and by itself, it unfolds outside with its own perfection.

The thoughts about the selfish interest puts us in troubles. When our actions are selfless, we attain fulfilment in the heart.

We can figure out some good for everyone, in each of our action. That way, we can create weight to our action, and we can attain fulfilment with every action.

All our actions in life are for fulfilment. When we think about myself, and accomplishments of my life, the fulfilment last for only a few moments, but if we think about others, and act for the larger good, we create virtue for our self, and this forms the chain of goodness in our life.

The sage’s talks from the highest wisdom and they know the real purpose of mankind, i.e. to realize the highest self and grow with the highest self in serving the mankind. With this law, it’s impossible to entertain a single thought, that doesn’t serve others, or to have the thoughts that don’t make any real contribution to the personal growth or the growth of others.

We make or break our life, with our thoughts. We can choose to have unkind and selfish thoughts towards the world, and our mind and emotions will serve us that way. If we think kind and selfless thoughts towards others, the path of life, will be designed that way.

We can create more goodness, by thinking better for others.

No person can achieve more, only thinking about himself. Our own body, mind, and emotions don’t support if we think selfish thoughts.

We don’t have much need for our self, so when we think only about our self, we fulfil our needs in a very short time, but then we drag with our life, by creating unnecessary desire, to go on with life, and this desire then carries problems with them, in our life.

Most of the time, we don’t do any real work, but spend our time, solving the problems, of the past. This way an ordinary man takes one step forward and two steps backward, in his life.

We get thoughts, what we ask for. If we create the intent to serve the world, that kind of thoughts and emotions and strength will be given to us. Always choose selfless thoughts and act out of those thoughts, to have the greatest fulfilment in life.

Lesson from the Verse 7 :

Lao Tzu has the best way to share his message. The teachings start from nature, and it ends up giving the lesson to the world.

In verse 7, Lao Tzu shares a secret or a mystery to live the life of eternity. We can only be eternal, if we think about others, and choose to serve the needs of others. Our needs get satisfied if we live to satisfy the needs of others.

The highest feelings we can have is for the fulfilment of life. Lao Tzu asks us to take selfless action to have the greatest fulfilment in life.

Unless we practice, Lao Tzu’s teachings in our life, we will not know the real benefit of it. We can only experience and feel, what the sages feel if we show the courage to walk on their footstep.

For this entire series, we have a great chance to walk on the footstep of the sage, & apply their teachings in our life, to see the difference. Every day, we get some new teachings to apply in our life. One thing is for sure from the teachings, is that we will never go backward if we apply these teachings in our life.

Verse 8 :

One who lives in accordance with nature does not go against the way of things.

He moves in harmony with the present moment, always knowing the truth of just what to do.
