How Mind is different from Consciousness?

The mind is the surface reality, while the consciousness is the deeper truth of life. Both mind and consciousness are one and the same but their experience differs.

To experience the mind, all you need to do is, close your eyes, and you will experience the activities in the mind. To experience the consciousness, all the activities of the mind cease to exists. The experience of consciousness happens, when you dive deeper within the self, beyond the surface layer of the mind.

In a way, both mind and consciousness is an experience. When the mind is closed and filled with memories, it has been termed as mind, but when the same mind is free from all the memories, it is experienced as pure consciousness.

To experience the mind, you don’t need much effort. Even going through your daily activities of life, you can experience your mind. But to experience pure consciousness, you have to go through the whole inner process. The mind transcends to another level with the experience of pure consciousness.

When the spirit ties around the body the mind remains in between. All the experiences and impressions gathered by the mind remains stored in the mind.

In the spiritual experiences, the spirit un-ties the body and with it, even the mind gets untied. When the mind gets untied and feels detachment from the body, only then you can experience the truth of the mind.

It’s only with the realization of spirit in the body, you can experience the consciousness. The realization of spirit is the primary condition.

The experience of the mind is full of memories, while the experience of consciousness starts when your mind becomes free from all the memories. These doesn’t mean you lose all your memories, rather you elevate yourself to the higher state of consciousness. When you come back to the mind, all the memories rush back to the mind. But once you have experienced the truth of the self, the memories of the mind holds less control over you.

To understand the inner mechanism of mind and consciousness, nothing serves you best than the example of a handkerchief.

When the handkerchief is folded and tied with a knot one after another. The handkerchief with knots is the mind. When all the knots of the handkerchief is opened, the same handkerchief can be described as consciousness.

The consciousness is an open handkerchief, while the mind is a closed handkerchief. Now, the handkerchief remains the same. But with the knot, it becomes the mind and without a knot, the same handkerchief becomes consciousness.

To experience the consciousness, you have to open the knots of the mind. These knots are nothing but the mind filled with all the memories of the past and the future. When you consciously take your attention inward and move deeper and deeper into your mind, you rise above the memories of your mind to experience the no-mind state. If you can hold your attention to the no-mind state, you can awaken the dormant spiritual energy that lies at the bottom of the spine.

With the awakening of the spiritual energy, you also experience the consciousness of the mind.

The practice of meditation on a daily basis can help you to experience the consciousness. Usually, the mind is trained to focus outside. When the attention of the mind is outward, it accumulates all the things of the outside world and makes storage inside.

When the same attention of the mind is taken inward, it moves deeper and deeper inside, beyond the memories of the mind to experience the ultimate truth.

The mind can function both the ways. If you keep your mind engaged in the outside world, it will keep on collecting memories of the outside world and churn the memories inside to give you different experiences of life.

If you take some time every day to take your mind inward and realize the truth of the self, the same mind will take you beyond the memories of the outside world towards the experience of the absolute truth.

It all depends on the choice of an individual where he directs the attention of his mind.

Along with the practice of meditation, the path of surrender in day-to-day life can also help you to experience consciousness. The path of surrender is a path of detachment. You participate in the process of life, but you don’t use the power or force to get the things done. Rather you allow the life to unfold out of its natural order.

The path of surrender is of participation. The path of surrender is of service. You work for the cause but you are not attached with its effect. These allow you to be more efficient with the action while still receiving the result out of the process.

The experience of consciousness doesn’t require effort, rather it requires an understanding of the inner world. You understand the inner mechanism of life while directing your attention inward. It requires some time on everyday basis with the self.

You observe how the things unfold in the inner world. So you don’t make any effort rather you simply observe, and allow the life to unfold on its own.

With the mind, the experiences of life remain limited to your perception, while with the consciousness you experience the true reality of life.
